What’s Up Wednesday #4

RobotWhat’s Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what’s up. Should you wish to join us, you will find the link widget at the bottom of Jaime’s post. We really hope you will take part!

What I’m Reading

In the last week I have devoured ASUNDER by Jodi Meadows and the much talked about THE WINNER’S CURSE by Maria Rutkoski. Both were fantastic reads and highly recommended.

I’m already part way through INFINITE, the sequel to ASUNDER, and finishing up THE LADY THIEF by A.G. Gaughen, which is the sequel to SCARLET, a re-imagining of the legend of Robin Hood with Will Scarlet written as a girl posing as a boy. So, SO good! I can’t recommend SCARLET enough.

Next up is WE WERE LIARS by E. Lockhart. I brought it for the school library and decided to sample it over half-term. I’ve heard only wonderful things about it, so let’s hope it lives up to the hype as THE WINNER’S CURSE did.

What I’m writing

When I’m not at the day job, I’m holed away in my writing cave rewriting the first half of SOULBOUND. June 30th is my deadline for getting this first draft done, and I’m hopeful that if I keep plugging away, I’ll make it. Already looking forward to revisions – is that weird? I’ve just been working on this draft for SO LONG now – coming up on two years – that sometimes it feels like I’ll never get there. But I will. I know I will.

What Inspires Me Right Now

Reading awesome books – and making more time to do so – keeping a writing journal, and finally being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel with SOULBOUND. Nothing can keep me away from my writing cave right now.

What Else Have I Been Up To?

I have this week off – working in a school means that I get loads of holidays – so have been catching up on all the stuff that gets neglected during term time like visiting family and deep cleaning. Hence why I’m finally updating this blog. We’ve had family staying with us for a month, which was lovely, but we’re glad to finally have the house back to ourselves again – and just have some space, really.

We saw Godzilla on Saturday, and I was hugely disappointed. I expected more… and it just wasn’t there. Oh, well. But we did catch the trailer for Jupiter Ascending, and that looks fantastic! We’ll definitely be seeing that at the pictures soon enough.

Now that the weather is improving (well, when it’s not slinging it down like today), we’re walking almost every day and exploring the overgrown hollow right at the top of our street. We find a new route every time. It’s lovely.

  1. I swear, we should get, like, deadline days from our day jobs, like vacation days but with permission to sit in coffee shops in yoga pants. You can do it though! *waves pom poms*
I think I read Scarlet in High School but man, that sounds awesome, so if I haven’t, I need to track a copy down.
    Good luck with your draft!

    • Oooh, we can only dream! Deadline days sound fantastic. We should start a petition. And thank you for the cheerleading. *raises own pom poms*

Scarlet only came out a couple of years ago. So if you can get a copy – do read it! It’s brilliant! :)

    • Hi Melanie! Oh, you’ll love Lady Thief. It’s brilliant! I just love Scarlet and Rob together – their love story gives me goosebumps. Hope you get it soon! :)

  2. Reading awesome books–yes! I have a whole bunch I can’t wait to get to this summer. Setting deadlines can be so helpful, especially smaller ones that build up to a larger one. Best of luck (and hard work) meeting yours.

  3. So many good books in your Reading section! I still need to read ASUNDER, but I think it will require a reread of the first book. I have SCARLET very near the top of my TBR pile and I can’t wait to read it. It comes highly recommended by so many people. I’m currently reading WE WERE LIARS and am intrigued by it. The writing style is so unique in a good way!

Good luck finishing the first draft of your story! That’s a good solid chunk of time to get some serious drafting done. I hope I can get a bunch of revisions done in that time, too. I’ve been working on this story for 3 years this June, so I feel your pain. Have a wonderful week, Laura!

  4. Yes yes yes to Writing Journals! I started one about a month ago and it’s been the biggest help ever, if only to vent all my writing woes in :) And 2 years? Blimey. You’re so close, almost at the finish line! *waves pompoms*

    Have a wonderful week, Laura!

  5. Good luck as you finish up your draft! I read through Susan Dennard’s blog not too long ago and started to adopt some of her notebook techniques too. I have the writing journal and the notebook for each book. :)
