What’s Up Wednesday #1

What’s Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what’s up. Should you wish to join us, you will find the link widget at the bottom of Jaime’s post. We really hope you will take part!

What I’m Reading

I finished THE BITTER KINGDOM by Rae Carson on Saturday, and was blown away by how perfect the ending was. I don’t remember ever reading a more satisfying conclusion. The entire Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy was amazing, and Elisa grew to be one of my favourite heroines of all time. She’s smart and brave and comes to rely entirely on herself, and not her powers. And Hector! Lovely, steadfast Hector. Yes, this is one of my favourite series ever.

Started INCARNATE by Jodi Meadows yesterday, which has been on my to-be-read pile for a long time. I’m only a couple of chapters in and really enjoying it so far. The prose is lyrical and flows beautifully. I’ve got high expectations for this one—and pretty sure they’ll be met.

What I’m Writing

This is the final full week of NaNoWarmUp, a project ran by my friend and critique partner, Savannah J. Foley, and the lovely Kat Zhang, to help writers warm up their writing muscles for NaNoWriMo by writing 25k in October. I’m trying to get caught up on SOULBOUND. I’m pathetically behind—only 8.5k in—as I wound up switching tenses and POV, but will really push myself over these last few days to meet the goal. I can do this!

What Inspires Me Right Now

I’m getting to know the three others writers grouped with me as part of the Secret Life of Writers Buddies Project. We’ve just got past the self-introduction stage and are now discussing what we want out of all this—whether we’ll become a full-blown writer’s circle, or split off into pairs. I already have two wonderful critique partners, but it’s always great to make new friends in this community.

Also, I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo and Susan Dennard’s NaNoWriMo Bootcamp next month, so need to gear up for those. I’m cheating this year and continuing with the first draft of SOULBOUND, which should be complete by the end of November at 75k.

What Else I’ve Been Up To

It’s been a crazy few days. Neil and I went to London for a couple of days to visit his cousin, and submit some paperwork to the India Visa Application Centre. We’re flying out in nine short weeks. Can’t believe how fast that has come around! Saying that, come early December we’ll have been dating for one whole year—now that’s terrifying! We’ve also been house hunting and preparing to move in together. Right now I stay at his place a few days a week, but we’re so ready to make it permanent, so I’m job-hunting. The prospects are good, so fingers crossed that I find a new job quickly. Very grown up stuff.
